Treasure basket: what it is, what it's for, and how to create your own

Cesto de los tesoros: qué es, para qué sirve y cómo crear el tuyo - MINIPIU

If you have a baby between 6 and 18 months old and are looking for ways to stimulate their development naturally and without complications, the treasure basket is probably the simplest and most effective starting point of the Montessori and Pikler approach.

It's not a toy. It doesn't have batteries, lights, or make sounds. It's a basket full of everyday objects with different textures, weights, sounds, and shapes, which the baby can freely explore with all their senses.

What is the treasure basket?

The treasure basket is a sensory stimulation activity developed by British educator Elinor Goldschmied in the 1980s. The idea is simple: a wicker basket filled with natural and everyday objects, safe for the baby, that offer a wide variety of sensory experiences.

Unlike conventional toys, which usually have a single function and primarily stimulate sight and hearing with bright colors and sounds, the objects in the treasure basket stimulate all the senses: touch (different textures, temperatures, weights), sound (some jingle, others are silent), sight (shapes, natural colors), and even smell and taste in the first months.

Benefits of the treasure basket for babies

Complete sensory stimulation

In the first 18 months of life, babies learn primarily through their senses. The treasure basket offers a sensory richness that no conventional toy can match: wood, metal, fabric, wicker, leather, stone, esparto grass... Each object is a new experience.

Concentration and autonomous play

One of the most surprising effects for parents is the concentration it generates. An 8-month-old baby can explore the basket for 20-30 minutes without needing an adult. This ability to concentrate, developed from the first months, lays the foundation for deep play and sustained attention.

Development of fine motor skills

Picking up, letting go, passing from one hand to the other, examining with fingers, putting in and taking out... all the manipulations the baby does with the objects in the basket intensely work fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Stimulates curiosity and thinking

The baby receives no instructions on how to use the objects. They explore them in their own way, at their own pace, following their own interest. This fosters curiosity, initiative, and exploratory thinking, foundations for future learning.

It's a perfect gift

The treasure basket is one of the most valued birth or first-year gifts by conscious families. It's original, educational, made with natural materials, and if it comes with a handwritten letter with a personalized dedication, it becomes something truly special.

From what age can it be used?

The treasure basket is designed for babies between approximately 6 and 18 months, although it can be adapted:

- 6-9 months: babies who can already sit up on their own (or almost). In this phase, they simply observe and manipulate objects they can easily grasp.

- 9-12 months: the most enjoyable phase. The baby can now grasp with a pincer grip, transfer objects from one hand to the other, examine them carefully, and put them in and take them out of the basket.

- 12-18 months: they start to lose interest in the basket as such, but the objects can be used for heuristic play, which is the next stage: exploring what happens when I put this here, fill this container, stack these pieces...

Important: the treasure basket should always be used under adult supervision, especially in the first months, to ensure that no object poses a risk to the baby.

What objects to include in the treasure basket

The general rule is sensory variety and natural materials. Some examples of objects that work very well:

- Wood: beech rings, wooden spoons, clothespins, mortars, small blocks.

- Metal: metal cups, spoons, small lids.

- Fabric and natural fibers: scarves of different textures, fabric scraps, ribbons.

- Wicker and esparto grass: small baskets, hoops, woven objects.

- Leather and natural rubber: small pieces that offer distinct textures.

- Safe everyday objects: a small brush, a measuring spoon, a small wooden rolling pin.

Frequently asked questions about the treasure basket

Is it safe for babies who put everything in their mouth?

Yes, as long as the objects are of an appropriate size (larger than the baby's mouth) and made of natural materials without toxic treatments. At MINIPIU, we select all materials keeping the baby's safety in mind. Nevertheless, we always recommend using it with adult supervision.

How many objects should the basket have?

Between 10 and 15 objects is ideal. Enough variety to maintain interest, but not so many that it overwhelms the baby. Over time, you can rotate some objects to keep things new.

What is the difference between a treasure basket and heuristic play?

The treasure basket is for babies who are not yet walking (6-18 months), who explore objects while sitting. Heuristic play is the natural evolution for children who are already walking (18 months - 3 years), who explore what happens when they combine, fill, empty, and group objects. At MINIPIU, you have materials for both stages.

Can I use household objects?

Yes, in fact, that's part of the philosophy: everyday household objects that the baby sees in their environment. A wooden kitchen spoon, a brush, a cloth rag... are perfectly valid. MINIPIU materials complement these objects with additional natural and sensory variety.
